The biggest issue with New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is that it didn't release in a vacuum. In 2012, New Super Mario Bros. U was a fun, polished, but decidedly generic romp through the Mushroom Kingdom. The game did little to improve or advance the New Super series of games, and it certainly didn't.
